Hawaii is not exactly the most business-friendly state out there.  Hence the motto of the Hawaii small business owner: “Live in paradise, work in hell.”  And while some of the frustration behind that statement comes from a government system that never saw a red tape it didn’t like and appears to be working to perfect the concept of bureaucracy, the pro-tax legislature has also done its part to try to hinder economic growth in the Islands.  For more on the question of whether Hawaii’s citizens and businesses are being taxed to death, check out this interview by Malia Zimmerman of Hawaii Reporter, who sits down with Lowell Kalapa of the Tax Foundation of Hawaii as well as a local businesswoman:
