In the next few weeks, the Grassroot Institute will release its 2011 “Pork Report: The Book Hawaii’s Government Doesn’t Want You to Read”. The booklet highlights waste, fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars–and fresh after paying taxes this year, this will definitely be something you want to read!

And here I thought “pork” spending was all semantics– seems it isn’t so. Senate Bill 249 passed on Tuesday would appropriate money to the State to bailout,¬†renovate, and run Oahu’s only slaughterhouse facility. Yes, you read correctly. The state literally wants to get into the business of pork.

The slaughterhouse has been losing money for years, yet the state wants to get their hands dirty in the slaughter business? All of this amidst a $1.3 billion deficit of the state budget. Meanwhile, talks of balancing the budget have focused on raiding special funds or freezing spending. Maybe neither one would be necessary if our legislators weren’t so intent on voting for pork: both figuratively and literally.
