Parents are about to pay a lot more for their children’s education to cover the State’s budget shortfall. The cost of school breakfast and lunch, after school care and summer school are all set to increase the next year.  Aside from those increases, there are talks in motion that might increase the fares for school buses as well.

These increases are coming in the midst of the Board of Education raising fees already this year as well. The cost of a school lunch was raised to $2.20 from $1.25, breakfast prices jumped to 95 cents from 35 cents and school bus fares rose to 75 cents each way, up from 35. With meal prices already above the national average of $1.87 for elementary schools and $2.13 for high schools, it’s shocking to even think that the Board of Education will continue to raise fees after they did so just this year.

The A+ after school program fee increase has already increased from $55 to $80, and Summer School tuition will now be $190 up from $160. While one would think that this would be the end of it, DOE officials warned that higher fees are likely to come down for school bus transportation to make up for a growing shortfall.

Personally, I’m tired of hearing of the shortfall and how the State is going to punish us by raising fees and taxes to keep their pockets full. It’s absurd to think that fees were already raised this year and now they’re going to raise them again? What in the world is going on!? This kind of action is the exact reason why we here at GRIH publish our annual Pork Report to identify ways the State can cut back on spending to help reduce the shortfall..WITHOUT raising fees on already financially strapped families.
