The Time is Now – A Message from the President of the Grassroot Institute of Hawaii by grassroothawaii

Tuesday, voters across the country demonstrated a dramatic shift in priorities to those of fiscal restraint and a smaller role for government in our lives. Tea Partiers made their voices heard, and fiscal conservatives have reason to celebrate.

Here in Hawaii, however, the results weren’t quite so promising. While there were a few bright spots, the vast majority of fiscally conservative candidates did not prevail. We certainly have our work cut out for us, and your support has never been more vital.

In 2011, the Grassroot Institute will be fighting harder than ever before to promote a pro-growth, pro-freedom agenda. Over the past year we’ve already grown substantially as an organization, nearly doubling our membership, instituting a number of new projects such as 4HawaiiansOnly.com, and reaching out to build conservative coalitions across the state.

In the coming weeks, I look forward to sharing even more exciting news about steps we’re taking to move the Grassroot Institute to the next level – steps that will help us to:

  • Expose how government officials are spending our money. In addition to unveiling our spending transparency website in the coming weeks, we will be pushing for state legislators to implement fiscal notes into the legislative process, i.e. to start actually looking at “price tags” when spending our money.
  • Put a stop to proposals that threaten to further harm our economy. Proposals like the Akaka Bill and various tax increases threaten to grow the size of government and limit prosperity even further. We already have one of the least friendly business climates in the country due to high taxes and a host of regulations, such as the Jones Act. It’s time to reverse those trends with reforms that increase freedom and prosperity.
  • Quit allowing government employee unions to call the shots. Ever-increasing government employment, higher-than-private-sector pay and benefits, and a state pension system underfunded to the tune of $9 billion (and growing) will bankrupt our children and grandchildren for years to come. We must reform the system now and quit allowing taxpayer-funded unions to dictate our future.

The threats we face as a state are real and significant, and to be fair, our side has some ground to make up. But in my travels throughout Hawaii these past few months, I’ve been inspired by the growing number of citizens willing to give their time, energy, and resources for the cause of freedom. It’s time to unite those efforts in a way that brings real change to Hawaii – and the Grassroot Institute stands ready to take on that duty.

Your gift of $1,000, $500, $250, $100 or $50 will help us to expose the irresponsible practices of Hawaii politicians and chart a new course for Hawaii.

After Tuesday night’s results there is no time to rest. Grassroot Institute will continue to challenge the status quo. Will you?
