For all of those thinking of a new profession, you might want to check out being a Honolulu City Councilman! According to articles and documents obtained by the Hawaii Reporter, Honolulu City Councilman Rod Tam obtained about $22,000 in reimbursements from 2006-2009 for about 90 meals at local restaurants. Officials said that up to $14,500 of it should not have been reimbursed because they were not related to his official duties.

According to documents, Tam charged a boatload of cash to tax payers for random parties, potlucks, get-togethers, Even his family members got into the act and got some free meals out of the city. Tam, in his defense, justified these purchases by saying that some people like meeting over a meal instead, and that the allergies in his office made it hard to meet people there. Yes. You read right people; allergies. I don’t know about you guys but that’s one of my top 10 worst excuses ever.

Tam says he made accounting errors, but the Honolulu Ethics Commission, which oversees city employees, had some harsh words for Tam and is ordering Tam to halt all improper use of these city funds, pay back $11,700 and pay a fine of $2,000. Maybe Tam will ask for a reimbursement for those fines too?
